Stunning views of the Bund from the Sky Lounge patio have helped make this the city's most famous bar. It's part of the "Best Bars in the World" contingent and makes a breathtaking spot for an afterwork drink, while, from about 9pm, the crowds arrive to make this one of the most packed party places in town. Regular slots from international DJs (mainly French) make this a good place to hear chunky house and the dirtier side of electro.
I dig the view. Pudong by night is awesome. This place has the best terrace in all of Shanghai, period. The crowd and the overall atmosphere is pretentious but hey! wouldn't you be if you had to pay god-knows-how-much-rent for such a prime property? Big ups for Bar Rouge
I agree with one writer below that this place may be fashionable but rudeness isn't in vogue. The girls in the front were rude, impatient and just treat certain people a certain way. Keep the racial profiling to a minimum bar rouge.
I have on numerous occasions reserved tables there for groups from 10-15 people to have a good time - NEVER AGAIN!!! The guy at the reception is so ruuuude!!! I went there on CNY with a few friends to get a few drinks after an amazing dinner and drinks elsewhere and we were subjected to the most rude and foul comments from that man... I will never ever again come near that place!!!
these guys throw the best parties in town if you ask me! but too many arrogant frenchies sometimes :-(
Went there on last weekend (september) and the place was empty, they said they made a party the day before so not a lot of people came back, anyway we were 5 peoples and took a table and order for 3000 yuans of drinks, as we were just 2 or 3 tables inside the club we decide to leave, a stupid french manager come at the table and start yelling at us because we didnt spend 4000 yuans, he start saying he is from cannes in france and act like a smartass without the smart... shame for him, we came from the same place and that does not mean you have to be arrogant to the only customers they have this night so i think this guy was dumb before arriving in China... Anyway it's a shame that the place was empty but you can understand it when you see how they act with customers...the decoration is simple, just the view on the bund deserve it, so if you plane to go there book a table on the terrasse and be aware that even if you spend 5000 a night they will keep on treating you like shit...just the guy at the entry is pretty cool, Definitely prefer the staff of the M1nt club....
Nice place to visit , bartenders could be increased based on that most love to people watch and drink at the bar. Outdoor patio definitely a nice place to lounge and chill. Music spun somedays with passion and other days not. Watching the crowds is a desirable key trait. Need some new gimmicks bells and whistles to keep it fresh.
It is a nice bar but REALLY not very fun. It is after work type environment for 30-something guys packing beer-bellies into designer shirts and entertaining gold-digging expat girls with over priced drinks. People go there for the name, not the actual venue, atmosphere, or drinks.
@pablomoney well i disagree on some point in here: the music in Bar Rouge is always good, the same as in M1INT. Whats wrong with being well dressed when going out? I buy drinks cos they taste good and many people might do just as that. i like the decor of Bar Rouge but like better at M1INT. I have independent thoughts and i dont have car/ much money/ and i am not a fashion slave and i dont work in finance but i go to Bar Rouge quite often. So there are mainly two types of people :like me and like the others you mentioned))) But there are three main things i dont like there: 1/often overcrowded and no free spot to dance at good music 2/lack of good service, waitering staff too busy 3/overpriced tables
Mister, you just might have yourself a deal.
@narsfweasels Only if we can hold the reception in M1NT.
@pablomoney I think we have to get married, I've never met a person I've had so much I common with before.
You will like this bar if: You have no discernible taste in music; you wear clothes which you think are fashionable - in fact, following the latest trends interests you greatly; you like to look at members of the same or opposite sex preening over themselves; you buy drinks because they are expensive, not because they taste good; you think the sign of a high class bar is bad service and even worse decor; you haven't had an independent thought in the past five years; you don't care about a single other thing in the world apart from yourself, your car, money, fashion; you enjoy being surrounded by greed, envy and hubris. In short, if you work in finance you'll love it! (And it has a very nice terrace + view)
If you love being ignored, having a cigarette butt shoved in your face and fighting your way through a postage stamp-sized dance floor to get a gulp of fresh air, then book an over-priced table at Bar Rouge! Everyone will ignore you, you'll pay too much money for your booze and you'll walk out hating yourself and feeling fat. If you're one of those losers who actually enjoys life, go to C's.
Honestly speaking i think this venue is going down, most time i go there it is overcrowded and the service is not good, i find M1INT much better place to go and to take your customers to. But make sure to make your names on the list before 7pm and enter before 11pm. Otherwise it is a problem to get in. Also the prices range for the table is better in M1INT than in Bar Rouge. One week ago i called to inquiry about the table, and the Bar Rouge Assistant told me that min charge for table is 6000rmb , regardless of how big the table is, because it is summer season, ridiculous! while in M1INT you can get different price ranges for different tables, we had a table for 10people for 3500rmb.
One of the first bars I went to in Shanghai. Great view but not a place I would go to often. Seems more for the older crowd, after-work type. More of a laid back environment, somewhere to go if you don't plan to get too crazy.
Not agreeing with Hanfeitzu we were there and the staff was not friendly, the drinks were not impressive and the lack of the crowd as you would expect it on a saturday evening round 11pm was proof that we changed the venue. Rather dissapointing as we had company guests to show around and everybody heard about Bar Rouge. Impressive is still the view! especially if you can watch the enlighted opposite bund. Overall not as good as it used to be!
I have been here on many occasions, and enjoyed myself dearly. But I must say, it's the company that counts. True enough, Bar Rouge is the "it" venue of shanghai, and has an amazing decor and view of the bund. However, I think it gets to the point of being slightly over-uppity. I have met 2 types of people here. Firstly people who are genuinely nice and are just there to have a good time. Secondly, people who are just snobby and are there to "be seen". Disappointed to say that I got terrible service here, especially my chinese friends who I bring along sometimes. Once I bought a bottle for 950RMB, but the waiter insisted on charging me 1000RMB because "thats the minimum spending for the bar table". Even though I offered to buy another drink to make up that 50RMB, I was told that I still have to pay 1000RMB. Ridiculous. I stored that bottle for the future and didn't receive a card back (to reclaim it). So when I called up recently to check if it's still there, the staff was impolite and kept telling me its most likely no longer there. This is after telling me they keep bottles for a month and it had only been 2-3weeks, contradicting themselves! The rest of the phone call involved me being on hold and transferred to mr and mrs bund, after which i gave up calling. Another incident was when I brought a chinese friend and the bouncer refused him entry because of his dressing. He was wearing a proper collared polo shirt with pants and proper shoes. Dress up really well to avoid disappointment. All I can say is, bring really great friends to enjoy the overall vibes and ignore the bad service.
BR ... So many stories and sunrises on the Terrace ! Like this place!
Seems like most of these reviews don't actually talk about the venue. This is not the place to vent about one bad experience you had (sorry girl whose friend got kicked out), its a place to write reviews. Bar Rouge is a great bar: fantastic view of the pudong skyline, a friendly service staff, and a gorgeous younger crowd. The drinks are good but on the expensive side. The music is mediocre. Great place to chill out and enjoy Shanghai, not the place to go if you want to party till the sunrise.
Last time i went to BR, Chris Willis was there and he was actually singing Live! Great bar but drinks are not cheap, as you can guess...
@daisycheng2004 The pretentious, narcissistic little poops on a stick that spend most of their time in Bar Rouge NEED to be beaten, so what's the problem?
Incredible!!!! i neveer saw such things. My best friend just being beated up by 6 security gards. The bar is manager asked 6 ( no kidding 6 against 1...) security guards to pull out my friend. The reason is my friend talked to one guy from the VIP room... hard deal for such a slam talk... I really advice you to go to 3 on the Bund, M1nt or SIN instead of this Bar rouge managed by some f---ing intern... VOL is going down....
The place is without doubt the city's hottest spot t for its combination of a good view, good music and party but not for its space. When i went there before 2years ago the place had enough space even lacking the real dance floor it was still ok,but last times i have been there its getting more and more people and is absolutely not possible to find a place to stand and have a drink i am not talking about dancing. and instead of having a good time the people getting more angry there trying to overtake others for a drink purchase. But if you are still up to a good party and music and ready to pay the entrance fee then is the place to be after 1-2 am when there is less crowd.next time we make it this way. Have a good party!
VERY shallow, indeed!
The most over rated venue in Shanghai. May be ok for people who spend a week in Shanghai and have no clue where to go to have fun. Most people who likes this place is only because they think other people think it's the place to be. It's mostly just a gathering of wannabe hipsters who go there just to say they're going there.
Beside the price like everybody is complaining about. I still think this is a very nice bar (again not all occasions applied). The place I like to bring my friends when they visit. However, management better do something about the hookers soon, else I won't be coming back again. It's getting more and more each time I visit... gosh...
i think it is certainly a place which has been overrated and over priced, the wine taste light and strenge even fake. People are strenge acting here, i had only stayed there for around half an hour.
Well, I don't really like Bar Rouge! it's totally different from the others, people there turn to be very arrogant! Good venue but low-quality!
Excellent most weekends - a must try.
Last night was great! Amazing views, lots of beautiful people. Yes very much on the posh side, but given the great music (!) and the friends I was with it was terrific. Not a place I would go to on my own though. Too high wannabe content. Bring lots of cash indeed, tis expensive
Bar Rouge was mentioned in CW's [Drinking Al Fresco](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/articles/blogs-shanghai/cw-radar/drinking-al-fresco/) story. Read up about this venue and more to make the most out of your summer.
hmm... that comment above me was from a friend of mine who was too drunk and too happy after we got back from rouge. i have to say i second her. rouge bar definitely a very cool place to hang out, dance, drink and check out the eye candies (that also includes the stunning view of the bund, of course). we were in shanghai for 3 days for the long weekend and clubbing at rouge just topped my first time shanghai experience. we wish we have something like this in beijing. rouge definitely will always be in my must-visit list whenever i go to shanghai again.
they play music that i like for sure! great drinks! but yes a little bit at the pricey drink group. but yea, with the experience, that;s what you can get. a lot of hookers when i went there, but nah, du dont feel ili
The bar manager and the servers do not even deal with sexual harassment from older European men after 3 times. That is really unacceptable. I've been to bars/clubs all over the world and never have I been treated this way. It was truly an awful experience in which I will never return.
Overpriced, pretentious, poor service and weak drinks, but go**amn are the ladies and views of Pudong gorgeous. Nice place for a drink after work during the week when it's not too busy or to bring someone you're trying to impress.
