Built in 1930, this classic European style three-floor theater took on a new look by designers from Singapore in 2003. It has been entertaining audiences in the heart of Luwan district, producing a variety of musicals, dramas, operas and comedies and has become a historic landmark as one of Shanghai's oldest theaters.
This is a nice little cozy theatre, quite small, comfortable seat and near the stage. We went on Sunday night with some friends to see some Kunqu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunqu) for 30 RMB/ticket. It was my first time (not sure I will go again but it is different and a good experience to have tried at least one). Basically there was 4 little mini play of around 30 minutes each what is good because change of costumes/change of actors/setting/story and so you keep concentrate. There is a dynamic translation in Chinese on each of the stage (not in English) to understand what the actors are singing/saying. I was little disappointed by the play as I was expected something with more actions but we had one specialist with us that explained to us that this form of art is about the poetic description of an event/feeling and not like in western art about the resolution of problem with an active plot. So be patient and try to enjoy the costumes, stage, and play as it is. To see what is on you can have a look at: http://www.culture.sh.cn/english/venue.asp?venueid=76 My advice: If you are a foreigner and you can’t read well enough Chinese, go with a Chinese friend to help you understand and translate at least the main story line to make it more enjoyable.
