Shanghai's turbulent search for a new identity makes for great art at Canadian Director Martin Kemble's French Concession gallery. An emphasis on free expression draws many artists trying to discard traditional notions of national and cultural identity. Submissions of artwork are accepted.
Great new space for Art Labor. When I visited recently the finishing touches for an exhibit were being done.
I went to have a look at the new Ying Yefu show on Saturday night and was very impressed! The new Art Labor space is wonderful. I can't wait to see what's on next.
Whoever, plat1num is, while we appreciate the comment, the owner is a sort of a balding middle age guy ha ha. but the art is, we do agree, quite special. Thanks for the up! And everyone, come by and see Ying yefu's big new show... great stuff.
Great place. The owner is nice... and handsome :) And, he always picks very good artists to exhibit.
Fernando Viscasillas, painter, professor, Award Lorenzo di Medici 2003 Florence Biennale( 5º Painting Prize), solo exhibition in Tokyo last year, and others in Bologna, Madrid, Lisbon, Savoie, Art Fairs like Montecarlo Art Expo..........next April solo show in Spain and in July collective in London with 8 large acrylics on paper cm 200x80, would like to promote my artwork in Shanghai, maybe in one gallery like yours. http://www.artmajeur.com/viscasillas Thank you very much, best regards, F.V.
Wow! Just down from Beijing a few weekends ago and caught Ren Zhitian's 'Everywhere is Here' opening - truly stellar! Excellent work and impressive space: will definitely try and make the next opening when I'm in the area! Formerly thought Shanghai's Art scene couldn't compare with Beijing's ... but believe I now stand corrected (and this is from a loyal Beijinger! haha)! Well done Art Labor - keep up the high quality work and excellent opening parties! : )
We might be only 165 m2, compared to so many really super awesome galleries around town who have like 500m2 and do nothing with it other than show the same old crap, but we try a lot harder than most galleries, and that is what is important to us and our artists. Esther has it right, we are something different ( though I would say Schlep alll the way here as we are located directly in the middle of the French Concession so unless you are ocming from outer Pudong it ain't much a of a schlep), and the Chinese artists we carry do not copy everyone else in the art scene, we are the next wave, not the same old blah blah. Thanks for the up Esther!
It's a small space. Don't schlep all the way there just for the gallery. But one good thing I saw during my 2 visits there: at least it did not have Chinese art, like all the other galleries in town. Something different.
