English map for Duolemeidi Mountain Resort

Located 220 km north of Beijing in Hebei Province, this ski resort features nine ski slopes, including two 1,800m long runs. Prices are reasonable, and the slopes aren't as crowded as those closer to Beijing. The chairlift fits six people and features a plastic wind-shield, which is vital on cold days. You can buy or rent your equipment at the ski station, and dining options include Italian pizza, Chinese dishes and shabu shabu.

My friend and I went to Duolemeidi in Hebei last year for a couple full days of skiing and snowboarding. The trip out was not bad, just a couple hours drive, and I always find that any drive outside of the city is a refreshing reality check. Actually Duolemeidi is situated not far from Zhangjiakou, a very well known satellite town from Beijing, and I believe now has a high-speed train that gets you there from Beijing. The slopes are, in my humble opinion, the best you’re going to get within the local area without flying or taking a long, long distance bus or train. The slopes, I’ve heard, are said to be the longest runs around. At around 2km, it takes an experienced skier/boarder to get from the top to bottom in about 3-4 minutes non-stop. When you compare it to bunny-slopes like NanShan, that's really a big step forward. The slope quality is very good. There are a fairly good variety of different kinds of slopes, with different difficulty levels. There are half-pipes, jumps, moguls, and wooded terrain, all available for the advanced and adventurous. The snow quality is not bad; when I went it was January, nice and cold, with natural snow on the ground. The man-made areas are also not bad. As a Canadian who has been skiing for much of my life, I definitely think its more than adequate, and together with the long, and varied slopes, makes for a very enjoyable skiing experience. I think one of the most amazing points about Duolemeidi is that its like Beijing’s best kept secret. Because of its slightly farther distance, it isn’t the new-beginner skier/boarder crowd. Most people there are at least adequate on the slopes, which keeps everyone moving. My friend and I went during Spring Festival, which was even better, because while most Chinese people went back home to their families, my friend and I were going up and down those slopes with almost no line-ups and no one else on the slopes. And because Duolemeidi uses ski-lifts that is from the same company that does the lifts at Whistler in Canada, its super fast and smooth, allowing you to spend less time on the lift and more time going down the slopes. This year, I’m going to do the exact same thing, go during Spring Festival. And I’m going to go a few more times if I can. Its perfect for a long-weekend group ski getaway!
