The cocktail alchemists behind Apothecary bring masterful cocktails and premium whiskies to the Jianwai SOHO set. Try the Apricot Old Fashioned or the Sazerac. Twilight plays mood-making jazz and is elegantly decorated, but plan to be fashionably late as the noise from downstairs in the early evening can sometimes break its spell.
This place never fails to satisfy. It's a great place to nurse a drink and since the music isn't loud at all, great for conversation. The only problem is the location--Jianwai Soho is just impossible to navigate
I will say Japan has some of the best bartenders in the world, why? because they polish their cocktails like jewels, just like the bartenders at Twilight. If you are a cocktail lover, you will enjoy and appreciate Twilight's cocktails very much!
Excellent drinks at Twilight last night. Had an Apricot Old fashioned (RMB70) off there mixologist recommended venue. When the bartender saw my friend struggling with her drink choice, he came right over and gave recommendations. Only problem is the acoustics in the place. The back room with sofas was occupied and loud. There was also a light fixture that was buzzing above my head. Distracting.
I've been to Twilight a number of times and each time is a real treat. While it is difficult to find (what isn't in this labyrinth SOHO) it's worth the effort. The staff is very talented and friendly. The drinks are inventive and divine - from the Moscow Mule to the bacon encrusted Bloody Mary. Don't forget the delicious french fries or fried chicken. I feel bad that this diamond in the rough is not better frequented. Should it fail in this location I hope it finds a rebirth somewhere near Sanlitun.
Great place with good cocktails. The Japanese Bartender is able to creative a drink base on your taste. This is place is defiantly better than Apothecary. p.s. whoever called the others idiots, that person is an idiot.
Stylish place, perfect drinks, tasty fries. Loved the way they serve the drinks. A big block of ice was swimming in the tumbler of my whiskey sour. The fries were super crispy and in combination with the dipping sauce super delicious. Second drink was perfect too. Food menu is very limited and seems a bit overpriced, but for the drinks it is well worth a visit when somewhere around.
I've been to Twilight 3 times, and all 3 have been pleasant experiences. Each time the place has been empty basically, so the mood was more chill and low key. I order my usual Bourbon Old Fashioned, but they have the Apricot version here which is a good twist, very tasty and well prepared. Once, I ordered the Olive Fritters which were OK not great, and the Cheese Plate left me wishing for more a little. Nonetheless, I did not have service problems and the drinks are consistantly good. Oh, and the Bloody Mary with Bacon is a pleasure... somehow it feels so wrong but tastes sooo sooo good.
not much on leaving reviews these days, cause of idiots on the this site. i do have to say that my wife and i finally got an evening to ourselves. we choose to visit here. heard and wanted to know. did not know that it was owned and/or ran from the Apothecary group. i do have to say that my mood was not the greatest, so no cocktails were ordered by us, which seemed to be a problem from the beginning. as for an upscale bar, i did not enjoy the Chinese services of someone standing directly over me waiting for me to hurriedly make my decision. for this reason, i simple ordered 2 waters just to get the women out of our space for just a moment to look at the dinner list, which just consisted of ' pizza '. i wondered ' want dinner menu, more like a snack menu '. i wanted to leave then, but choose to order a CHICKEN pizza. that was a CHICKEN PIZZA. when it arrived 38 minutes later, we assorted the filthy silverwear and handed to the bartender whom took 3 minutes to wash and return it instead of handing me anew. i plowed in it like a hungry man.by the way , not much to eat.. i spit it back on the plate for all i tasted was sausage., herds, spices, that went well with PORK.. i thought the server ordered wrong, as i begin to ask, she did not understand english. wow, what a plus, then some guy came over and explained that it was marinated in herbs and spices..... chicken. as a cook/chef, i truly did not understand why some food knowledgable person would use herds and spices used for PORK meat or PORK sausage on there dark or white chicken meat.. maybe a new creative way to conserve food cost.. again, since we did not order there over priced GORDENS GIN and tonic, the services simple got ugly and we just left the money on the table 12 minutes after the 60 rmb little pizza was devoured.. so say what you like, i truly understand that all food service and customer service industry can have a bad night, but if this is how it is. then i understand everyones reviews about the attitude of Apothecary as it has continued to Twilight.. sadden, cause i would love to find a watering hole in my neighborhood that i can call my own. will not return, nor make the trip to be treated with the same respect at Apothecary..
I was there last night and loved it. Drinks were spectacular, service was stellar, and the crowd muted and chill. The music was great too. If only it were closer to my house...
I'd subtract half a point for location, since I don't often go to Jianwai SOHO and usually get hopelessly lost when I do (I never would have found this place alone!). That said, the drinks are excellent -- I had the elderflower martini (RMB60), and then another elderflower drink, but I liked the first one more. While we were there, the owner/bartender gave us a taste of a couple of house-made vermouths he's working on - yum! They've also got what are probably Beijing's most comfortable bar stools. Decor is really classy. Hopefully the CBD crowd finds this place, though, as I'm likely to stick to Sanlitun.
