This authentic Indian/Pakistani restaurant serves a delicious, flaky Lahori fried fish and a seriously creamy palak paneer. What truly stands out, though, is the friendly waitstaff who go the extra mile to cultivate a loyal customer base.
We went there for Indian food, but what we got was... I don't know? I have traveled to India a lot in the past years, and have tried a vast variety of Indian dishes, but this didn't taste like anything I had before. When we walked into the restaurant, there was not a single Indian person in the room, and none came while we were there. Since we had to wait a long time for our food to arrive, despite moderate business, that seemed odd. We ordered plain Naan and garlic Naan. The former looked and tasted more like pizza-bread, while the latter was the same make, just with one or two lost pieces of garlic on it. Our rice was served last (like in a Chinese restaurant), instead of arriving with the other dishes. The okra dish consisted of a few pices of okra and a lot of green peppers, which looked similar to okra at first sight. The chicken dish came with so many potatoes that we considered ourselves lucky to find some chicken in there at all. All in all, it was an experience we don't want to repeat.
The palak paneer was such a highlight although I thought Vindaloo is supposed to be spicy? It was actually really tame. But the big disappointment was the service--it was sooooo unbelievably slow. To just have the starters was at least 30 minutes, and then it seemed like another 30 minutes just to get at the mains. Everyone else in the restaurant seemed really grumpy about the service as well. The manager did come out and speak with us, which made us feel a little better about it. But--we went on a Tuesday night, so what must a weekend be like??
This place was one of my favourite indian restaurant where i used to go quite often but i don't think i'd ever go back again. I was there last sunday with a couple of friends as usual but the service was way too slow. Although fuwuyuan were kind but they weren't really around so it took us ages to speak to them everytime what we had to ask something. We also had to wait over half an hour to have our foods. Itd have made us less upset if the maneger appolozied for the slow service and stuff instead of blaming on the new kitchen staff. The curry was a lot much greasier than before. Vindaloo was not spicy at all even though we requested for. Plus the portions has gone down but price went up-Very much dissapointed!
Mughal's located at Nali Patio, Sanlitun Bar Street is my number one choice when I have a craving for curry. And this is a with good reason, too. This decently decorated restaurant offers good quality Pakistani / Indian food, friendly service, a decent bar, and good desserts. Mughal's menu is not too long but offers a good selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices. Go for the Mixed Vegetable Jalfrezi, Lentils cooked with Spinach and Chicken Bhuna, all of which stand out in terms of flavor and taste. We liked the Mutton Kadhi too. But our vote for the best entree at Mughal's would go to the Chicken Tikka Masala. The nan breads here are bit different (more crisp) then as made at other places. The only thing they lack is South Indian Dishes. But, overall.... Its a good Curry place.
Reserved for a party of 6 , all on time, reasonably fast service. Pleasant surroundings, humorous waiter, great beer selection, excellent food, superb Naan bread. All in all a great evening. Our third visit, just a great place to dine out. Highly recommended.
Very average indeed. Went there on a Wednesday night with 5 colleagues and it was completely empty. Food was clearly pre-made, lifeless and too oily even for Indian. Service was pleasant - obviously nice people working there but the overall atmosphere, decor and food was hopeless. My Indian colleague said it was like a bad fast food Indian place only without the freshness. They also do not have a working fapiao machine.
Went here with some people using a groupbuy coupon and got to try a number of things. Liked the curries and bread, didn't think so much of the salad (so many onions) or the mango dessert pudding thing (just don't like that texture personally) at the end. *Really* liked the lamb vindaloo though. Would definitely come back for the curries.
Delicious food with friendly and attentive service. Tried the butter chicken and palak paneer. Loved it! Really hit the spot. Garlic naan was good as well. Manager was really nice. That's a plus plus. One of the best Indian/Pakistani food in town without any doubts.
What can I say? Delicious delicious delicious. We loved the BBQ platter! Restaurant setting was nice and comfortable. There was also outdoor seating. Service was very attentive. Manager was always sweet and smiling. Food and drinks were mostly reasonably priced. Keep up the good work!
Tried Shorba Naan which is a new dish at mughal, it's a mouth watering preparation. Naan soaked in curry tastes wonderful. It has the perfect level of spice and sauce. From a choice of Lamb, prawn and Chicken, we tried Lamb and prawn and both were very very good.
I order a curry and nan bread. Just get a call and I speak for 10 minutes. I come back to my table and the nan bread is so hard I cannot eat. I order some rice and finish the food ,its not tasty the chicken curry and is too oily. The restaurant is empty and no customer so I think its not popular because the food is problem here. I stick to my xinjiang restaurant is best.
i really love the food,it's so delicious and service is also very good
We were in a rush for dinner when we got to know the renovations were done, went directly with the well-received gourmet month menu, always tasty. Left stuffed and couldn't get to our feet. It suddenly occurred to me that I did bet for it that the place gonna be hot about a year ago.
Best Pakistani Restaurant!!! Its one of the Best Restaurant in Beijing... May be in whole China :) the food here is very delicious...and its also not very expensive....
Last night was our first time to Mughal's so we decided on their Gourmet Month menu, and we were not disappointed! Everything that came to the table was very delicious. The meat was tender, and all the dishes were nicely spiced. Speaking of which, like many of the reviewers before us, we noticed right away that this restuarant lets the spices speak for themselves-we loved the fact that their food is not swimming in oil or butter. This is now our new go-to place for Indian (& Pakistani) food, and we'll be sure to spread the word!
Tested out the gourmet month menu at Mughal's last night, and left stuffed, satisfied, and determined to organize at least one group dinner to make sure my friends take advantage of this deal. The mixed barbecue plate of shrimp, fish and lamb was perfectly spiced, and went well with the butter nan. The service is friendly, attentive and efficient, and the curries were delicious! For 99RMB, you can't beat this deal.
Tried the half-price menu last night. Not too bad. The food is Pakistan-Indian food, which I guess means meat. That being said the veggie samosas were the best part, as they came with two different sauces, both excellent. Got the chicken tikka masala and found that it was a tad too buttery. The lamb vindaloo was better, but it was very spicy. The nan was okay, nothing to rave about though. All in all pleasant dining experience, and super cheap for the month of March when their top 15 dishes are offered at 50% off.
I have always thought this was the most underrated Indian restaurant in Beijing. The curries are savory goodness the likes of which I have not seen replicated elsewhere. WIth the new renovation, i like Mughal's more. The chairs are super comfortable, lighting perfect for a business lunch or an evening date, and everything is very reasonably priced. The owner and his wife are almost always around which is always a good sign. When they aren't, the manger is uber accomodating; bery pleasant to talk to.
cool. thanks.
It's still open -- they're doing renovations through the end of February, but there's a special promotion where if you spend RMB200, you get a free bottle of wine or two beers. Come March, Mughal's will have an expanded dining room and fresh new look. :)
is it closed ? I saw that the sign was no longer there yesterday... ?
Went for diner, staff is very attentive and I really liked the food. I am a big fan of Indian Kitchen but I found that food was better and more tasty in Mughal. I just miss that they don't have more Tandoori choice...
We went here for the weekday buffet lunch, which was very good. The service is attentive and very friendly, and the environment is very good. The buffet choices included dahl, tender chicken in a special sauce (I forgot the name), seasoned fish filets, beef with vegetables, vegetarian stew, two kinds of rice, fresh fruit, rice pudding, and some tasty fresh vegetable salads. Everything was good. I think the food is lighter and more healthy than you find at the typical indian restaurant buffet. I would also highly recommend their lemon drinks. Between all of us, we tried the lemonade, the mint lemonade, and the hot water with lemon. All were delicious. The mint lemonade was unique with lots of fresh mint (minced and floating throughout the drink); how delightful! And the hot water and lemon was great- just the tiniest hint of sweetness with lemon and hot water. Since we arrived near the end of the lunch service, there were a couple of dishes that were running low (and did run out) which they didn't replace. Still, we thought it was understandable, as they don't want to waste food. Next time we'll try to arrive a little earlier.
Truth be told, I’m not a big fan of indian food, sometimes they are little too spicy for me, but this family run Indian restaurant did it for me. I love the ambiance, the service and the best of all the food. The samosas and garlic nan was marvelous, and the byriani rice with spice made me an immediate fan. Before I used to walk by and always was wondering, why this place it is always packed but now I understand. The food is wonderful, the service is wonderful, and the view atop the nail patio is wonderful. I’ll be back and I strongly recommend this place to anyone
So here is my take on this restaurant. If you like Indian food then you also like curry and if you like curry then Mughal’s should be on your list of places to eat. I’m partial to the lamb curry because it has a richer meat taste than the others. Nan is absolutely essential to mop up the amazing sauce left over. The biryani (sp) rice has an incredible aroma and taste. I don’t like lassi but their tea is nice. What I like most about the food is that it is authentic in taste but lacking in the copious amounts of oil usually found in Indian food. Like all Indian food, not MSG is used. In other words, it's Indian fare for the health conscious. No I can eat my favorite curries relatively guilt free.
Sorry but this is probably the best Indian food in Beijing. Their biggest problem is the restaurant is difficult to find however it their new location at the top of the Tongli Patio is so much better than the last because now you can dine on the roof at sunset. Who doesn't like a rooftop dining option? Here's why you want to go: first, the ingredients are fresh. Second, each curry / dish is slow roasted individually so the Tandoori chicken doesn't taste the same as the Tandoori lamb. third, although most indian food can be on the oily side, they don't use that much. Lastly, the staff work hard to please. They are consistent: I have eaten at Mughals restaurant probably once a month since I arrived and I've never had a bad meal. I normally go for dinner but the lunch buffet is really good deal as well.
Absolutely love this place. I find the 45RMB/2ppl Lunch Buffet to be the best value for quality in the area. Conveniently located smack in the middle of Sanlitun on the 4th floor of the Nali Patio its also a great pit stop for some refreshing lassis in an assortment of flavors (from mango to coconut) for these hot summer days. Definitely recommend Mughal's for an authentic taste of Pakistani cuisine in the city and a great lunch buffet. Will be visiting again soon.
A friend and I enjoyed ourselves immensely at the new buffet lunch offering at Mughals. They're offering a RMB 45 deal on buffet lunch and best of all its "Buy-one-get-one-free"! We Started with a choice of four salads, and two entrees, fantasic samosas and pakoras. Then we had a choice of 2ix-seven main dishes including moutwatering chiken seekh kababs, chicken karahi, qeema (mince beef) and aaloo palak. the two vegetables were also well cooked yet hadn't lost their shape or flavor. The main items could be eaten with a choice of two rice and if you really want to treat yourself, to oven fresh, buttered naan. yummy! last but not least, we could enjoy the kheer (rice pudding). Though honestly I took my time with the savory items and went back for second helpings of all! At the fantastic price tag of RMB45 for two people, this is really not-to-be-missed. And a perfect opportunity to anyone who hasn't tried pakistani food (decidedly different from it's indian cuisine cousin), and
I had a great lunch at Mughal's today - the express menu is extremely reasonable. I had the middle option at 45RMB and haven't needed to eat any dinner. I can also highly recommend the kulfa - made to owner Samia's secret recipe. Made with condensed milk, it tastes much more decadent than ordinary ice cream! I'm coming back with my daughter...
It seems like going with the chicken tikka masala was the right choice given that so many others have given the course a "thumbs up." Make sure to grab some garlic nan on the side to finish off the sauce. I'm more concerned with seeing a livelier atmosphere. Being the only ones at a restaurant can be fun and relaxing, but it also feels like the restaurant isn't doing too well. Maybe we just went on an off night.
I agree with the upstair! I've been there more than 3 times. The food is one of the best Indian food I had ever tasted and the service always friendly. Especially the owner, he is very polite and kindly. I like the food, people and restaurant.
Mughal's serve authentic cuisine. I have gone there atleast 5 times with friends from different countries and they have all enjoyed it. The décor is simple yet quite traditional. The service is great and the owners are always looking forward to attend the customers. I think their prices are very reasonable taking into consideration the quality of food & service. I wish they keep it up.
Just visited Mughal's for the first time and I am shocked at the experience of hongkonggirl. Judging from the rest of the comments it seems like it could not be the same restaurant, but you of course are entitled to your opinion. My experience was great. The chicken tikka masala was unlike any i had ever tasted, and like wuerfie i found it one of the best i had ever tasted. The manager told me from the getgo that this was a pakistani/indian restaurant and that flavors might be different than straight indian food. In fact on the sign of the restuarant it says "pakistani/indian" food, so tough to see how that could be missed, but maybe those signs are new. The reiti (sp?) was lightly wonderful as was the garlic nan. Could not imagine more accommodating service. I look forward to returning soon. This is a new gem.
wuerfie said it all... main thing missing is a bit of atmosphere... music is good but decoration is a bit on the austere side (uncommon comment for an indian joint) and being almost alone in the restaurant does not help feel cozy. a pity, coz' the set menu was excellent value for money and if the lassi had enough calories in it to prevent me from ice-skating in houhai the whole winter for fear of going right through the ice, it was so good i almost ordered a second one. good luck!
I have to admit, when looking for a new place to eat, I often look for a crowded place. The more people, the better the food, right? Usually that holds true. Then, one day as I was scouting Nali's shops by stairs, I stumbled upon Mughal's. With only one table filled, I wasn't convinced I should stay, but the music pulled me in. And I'm glad it did - the Chicken Tikka Masala was one of the best I've ever had, and the Nan was delicious. Service was great, atmosphere good, and the price was right. And, the food far exceeded the crowded Indian restaurant on Nanluogu. I went back last night to make sure Mughal's was worthy of a good review. It is. Please fill their seats.
Great food, convenient location, not too expensive. Staff was super friendly as well. I thought the lemonades were a bit sweet, but they also have 4 kuai beers - almost unheard of at any restaurant, let alone on in Nali Studio.
I like the food, especially the SAMOSA, Chicken Tikka Masala and Nan.
